The effect of soluble phenolic compounds from hydrothermally pretreated wheat straw on Trichoderma reesei cellulases and commercial enzyme cocktails

Abstract Hydrothermal methods are commonly applied in pretreatment of lignocellulose for conversion to biofuels and chemicals. This partially disassembles solubilizes hemicelluloses lignin, releasing sugars phenolic compounds, which potential inhibitors the subsequent enzymatic saccharification step. In this work, inhibitory effect soluble phenolics hydrothermal liquor on canonical Trichoderma reesei enzymes was investigated, using purified cellobiohydrolases, endoglucanases, a xylanase, lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase, as well commercial enzyme cocktails Cellic Ctec2 Celluclast. The fractionated enrich phenolics, thoroughly analyzed. most sensitive inhibition were major crystalline cellulose degradation primary component cellulolytic mixtures. These inhibited by oligophenolics phenol-carbohydrate complexes (lignin-carbohydrate complex type compounds), latter could be mitigated other enzymes, i.e., xylanases endoglucanases.
